Connected Car

Driving Guidance is the area of automotive ICT. Electronics are put to use for information, entertainment and driver support and will eventually take over driving tasks. The goal is to improve traffic flow, safety and the environment.

This is the new world of external systems that connect the car to the outside world in a two way communication for improved safety, traffic management (floating car data, road billing), infotainment downloads, internet, diagnosis and repair, security, etc. The connection is wireless and increasingly autonomous and will use a multitude of protocols for different purposes. Car2X communication will be the key supporting technology for a range of new services to be developed in the near future. This innovation area is particularly relevant to the Netherlands. Not only because of a strong industry in electronics, but also since Governmental plans for road billing necessitate all cars to be equipped with communication technology by 2012.

Dutch Highlights

Navteq
Map and Positioning Engine

Navigation information is no longer only used by drivers, but also by an increasing number of car systems like headlights, active safety systems, hybrid powertrains or road charging.
Navteq, a leading supplier of digital maps, has developed a Map and Positioning unit that is not meant to communicate with the driver but with systems only. A totally new product providing exactly the specialized level of information these new systems need at the lowest cost, mounted behind the car firewall and hence fit for OEM installation.

TomTom
High Definition Traffic + IQ routes

The new TomTom HDT system generation autonomously connects to back office to communicate position and speed. TomTom turns the car into a sensor providing unmatched accuracy and coverage of traffic information. As a result TomTom acquired unique databases on average speed per 5 minutes throughout the week on all Dutch roads. IQ-routes makes this information available to all system users to further enhance their system performance. An innovation in functionality, service level and in the approach of using the customer base to drive system performance.
